Spent most of the day collecting seed and removing invasive European buckthorn on the Zion/Waukegan beach ridge sand prairies today.
The area was recently awarded RAMSAR designation as a wetland of international importance.
Monarch flight was steady south along the Lake Michigan shoreline across dunes heavy with several species of blooming goldenrods and asters. We also saw one red admiral sunning itself near the parking area, and one sulphur.
My observation covered a period of 5.5 hours. I saw eleven monarchs total, flying south. Not a lot of nectaring activity but some. Most was directional flight. We were collecting seed in the morning and cutting brush in the afternoon, so I probably missed some, but those are the ones I counted.
