Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 10/11/2016

Number: 3500

Two of our PNW-tagged Monarchs have been found at the Lighthouse Field, Santa Cruz overwintering site by John D.

John reports that this overwintering colony had grown to about 3500 individuals on Oct 11.

Remarkably, one of the tagged Monarchs John sighted on October 11 was one that had previously been sighted in North San Francisco (nectaring on the balcony of a high rise apartment) on September 18! This Monarch began its life reared and tagged by Molly Monroe and her 5 year old daughter in Corvallis, Oregon. Does anyone know of any other tagged Monarch that was seen twice on its migration???

The other tagged Monarch that John spotted at Lighthouse Field was on Sept 30. This one had flown about 700 miles from Yakima, Washington where it was released on Aug 21. This is the 3rd Monarch released in Yakima that has been sighted at Lighthouse Field in the past few years.
