Altus and I saw our first monarch in town last Wednesday (10/5)
crossing on red thru the traffic light at about 3', moving
briskly to the SW. Since then (10/11), we have been making daily trips
over to the peninsula at the northeast end of the Lavaca
Bay Causeway. We have encountered as few as one in the one
hour survey and today came across ten ... five flying from NE
to SW and five nectaring on goldenrod in an hour and fifteen
minutes. We (Altus) are driving along the east and west side
beach roads of the mile long peninsula at about 5 mph, but stop
and scope a few thick stands of goldenrod ... been doing this
for twenty plus years.
85 dF, mostly sunny, wind light, SE calm at times. Long range
prediction is for a "good" cool front to reach the coast by
next Friday, prediction is for a low in upper 40's possible.
A strong NW wind is predicted to start Thur, 20th.
