Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 10/15/2016

Number: 1

My Mother resides at the Centre Crest nursing facility in Bellefonte, PA. There is an enclosed garden (roughly 70’ by 50’) for the residents that is shielded on three sides (W, N, & E) by the facility. Our last previous sighting at the facility was 9/14/2016, and the last sighting I’d made in the local area was 9/25/2016 at the University Park Airport (SCE) where I work. I thought that would be our last Monarch for the year. However, today we spotted a male Monarch butterfly feeding on a pale purple aster in the residents’ garden at about 1:45 PM. It appeared that part of his left front wing was missing, so I’m not sure he’s going to make it to Mexico. While the residents’ garden is a bit protected, the “outside” temperature was about 65 F degrees and the wind, while variable, was blowing at about 12 mph from the SSW.
