I was surprised to see a male monarch checking out the remaining flowers in my backyard this afternoon. We've had a light frost here so a lot of the flowers are gone, but there's still quite a bit of tall verbena (Verbena bonariensis) blooming and he spent a long time nectaring on that. Temps were in the upper 70's, which is unusually warm for this time of year, but there were very gusty winds out of the west. This is one of the latest monarchs I've ever seen in my yard.
