Our house is at 2,450' on the Western slope of Davis Mountain. Sunday, one lone Monarch flew by our deck, having cleared Long John Mountain 1 mile to the North, and, with a slight tailwind, headed up the slope to clear Davis Mountain's 3,000' and on southward. He/She was gone before I could run in and get my camera, but it flew just 10 feet from me - definitely a Monarch, not a Viceroy.
Early last week, I saw another single, but can't remember the exact day.
