Date: 10/23/2016

Number: 36

42 migrating monarchs seen today as summarized below-quite exciting!!

10/23/16 @ Tip at Point Pelee National Park 2:15-4pm & 4:30-5:00pm, none tagged; all but 1 fresh looking; 1 had torn hind wing.
Gorgeous sun shiny blue cloudless sky day 14°c-17°c SW wind @19kmh
Upon arrival at Tip parking lot immediately observed 3 flitting about & shortly afterward at least 5 flitting about the TIP restrooms area...one settled on rooftop.
While on east beach & Tip observed at least 25, twice 4 at a time, flitting about the tree tops. Did not observe any actually arriving...just simply flitting around the trees. Did see a few, 2-3 venture SE out over the lake & continue journeying SE out of view. Observed one (seen in video on fb page) attempt this...then struggling with wind flitted west to Tip then quickly retreated back to the east over Lake & out of view.
Upon returning at 4:30 pm Observed 2 monarchs nectaring on Short's Asters & one flitted across west path & into interior trees.
No longer saw any on east beach or at Tip area nor did I locate a roost.
Total of 36 at PP; 5 at Hillman Marsh & 1 flitting across Point Pelee Drive.
42 !!
A couple of days expected this week with favorable north wind but temps are dropping, highs of 12°c-17°c forecast. Great day!!
