I did my chores early so I could keep my eyes on the sunflowers in the afternoon. Temperatures were predicted to be in the 70s (F) as the unusually mild fall continues. Would it be possible that a monarch would come this late? The steady stream of one to a few a day since mid September made me believe it was possible.
The male showed up at 3 p.m. He was small but with vivid colors. He stayed for about 45 minutes, sipping nectar from the sunflowers, and then he was gone.
