I was on the Blue Ridge Parkway at the high elevations between MM 441.4 (Standing Rock OL) and MM 430.7 (Cowee Mountain OL) and saw migrating monarchs. It was mid-day, sunny, 12:20 to 1:30 and around 58 degrees. Saw the first one at Standing Rock, 4 at Roy Taylor OL, 9 between Roy Taylor OL and Cowee Mountain OL, 2 at Cowee Mountain OL and returned to Roy Taylor OL for lunch from 1 to 1:30. While at lunch we counted 15. Severe drought in this area and no nectar at this elevation although some monarchs were obviously seeking flowers among the brush. Wonderful sightings! I quite likely saw more but could not be absolutely sure as other butterflies were passing through as well.
