Monarch Adult Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 10/31/2016

Number: 1

Just before 13:30, 10C with moderate to gusty Southwest wind. I was walking out to take the blankets off of the garden after another frost when she flew up from the grass right in my path! She was dressed for Hallowe'en. We have had some nights at 0C (freezing) and also frost. I thought there would not be any more and have not checked the milkweed in almost 2 weeks. She tried to fly south but got carried east, first landing in the recently harvested soybean field and then when I got too close again, into a treeline between 2 neighbouring properties. There is hope for her as we are expecting a warm up into the low 20sC in the next few days and there are still some native nectar sources along the ditches and roadways. This is the latest I have ever seen a Monarch. Makes you wonder if in past colder years there were many more who just did not make it to maturity because the climate was colder than this year.
