My last hummingbird finally left, 3 weeks after the last ones, just as I was beginning to worry it might stay.
This young female rufous arrived in July, missing tail and some primary wing feathers, I knew it wouldn't be able to migrate until new feathers grew out, but fortunately for her, our mild fall weather has provided plenty of small insects for her diet.
Although she'll encounter little or no flower nectar along the way - and most nectar feeders have been long removed - the mild-weather insect supply will help her survive along the way.
These unusual cases are what motivate me to always provide nectar in early spring, and late into fall...
