Third graders at St. Matthias, Lanham, Maryland, planted tulips on a sunny but breezy day. The air temperature was 52 degrees and the soil temperature was 50 degrees.

Before the bulbs were planted, students observed cross sections of tulip bulbs to identify the parts and how these parts help the plant grow.
