We have many breeds of butterflies in our yard and have many monarch caterpillars and adult monarchs and pupas. Today we witnessed a very small monarch emerge and appeared to have severe trouble forming normally. When it did emerge from the pupa it could not hang on and dropped to the ground. Possibly affected by
Ophryocystis elektroscirrha ? Later on I had to fight off a much larger monarch that was trying to kill it. It finally rested for a long time and flew away. It was much, much smaller than our average monarchs, but it was not a viceroy.
