Hummingbird Sighting
Sightings report image

Date: 11/21/2016

Number: 1

This was a day of an extreme high, then an extreme low. I was sure I saw a hummer zipping thru the yard yesterday. Then this morning my husband spotted him/her (?) feeding on our Hot Lips bush, then zipping about the garden of now frost bit flowers. Had our first frost this weekend. I was so excited, ran in and got the camera, was thinking, Calliope? Rufous? Bt now I'm almost 100% sure it was an Allens Hummingbird. Got my pics, and waited, no more sighting, but ran in and mixed a small batch of sugar water. Noon time came, went to store, came back and again we went out back to watch and wait, wasn't to long before we saw him/her zipping across the yard, towards the flowers... then heartbreak, she/he flew right into the back of our outdoor sofa/storage unit. She laid there still. I was hoping against hope, maybe just stunned? But no, she/he was gone. Broke neck I believe. Needless to say I cried. To have thrilled at having he rarest opportunity to see such a beautiful creature and lose it was just so totally heartbreaking that it's life was gone. I have another pic of her/him, a little blurry. And I also have pics of this beautiful hummer after the accident.
