I stopped on a land section of the bridge that connects the town's of Apalachicola and East Point along the Florida gulf coast to pick up trash (mostly plastic bags). Here I saw a grave yard of what is likely thousands of monarch butterflies. I counted around 100 in a 50 foot area along the road. Apparently the monarchs are funneled into this area because it's the furthest point out to see in the gulf only to be struck by traffic. I talked with a local who was staff at the inn where I was staying and she said hitting them is a regular thing on the bridge. I can't help but wonder if a speed limit reduction just during the weeks around peak migration could be implemented to help stop this tragic loss.
