Monarch Adult Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 01/25/2017

Number: 10

I am visiting Berkeley this Spring and went to look for the known monarch roost colonies at the Aquatic Park (didn't find any) and Albany Hill Park. Today was the first warm, sunny day we've had after many days (weeks) of rainy weather. I saw quite a few individual monarchs flying about in sunny areas, as many as 4 or 5 at a time, but did not find the roost. I'd say at least 10 different ones, conservatively. Two were mating on the ground. I don't know how many were counted in the roost this year, but counts for previous years from all known roosts on the California coast can be found at www.xerces.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/WMTC-Data-1997-2015.pdf
