FIRST MONARCH OF THE SPRING! 12:15 today
Female monarch on small patch of oenotheroides. Collected 5 eggs from one 4" square. She was going from patch to patch in about a 15' square at East intersection of Columbine Curve and Monarch Path at the Radar Base [12 mi. N of Eagle Pass, TX.] She appeared to be dumping eggs. These were all on the tops of leaves, none close to ground or on undersides! Huge!-- at least 56 mm., slight fade, but no bird strikes or cactus tears. Oenotheroides sprouts scattered about, but less than 4" in height. This was the dark purple species w. very ruffled leaf edges and the plants were mixed with a variety of wildflowers, mostly tiny yellow and white daisies.
Of course this was the first day this week I did not carry my camera!
