I saw this loon bobbing around in the water & diving intermittently looking for food along a seawall on Galveston Island while there on vacation. As you can see, it is moulting its feathers & is in a transition state before it acquires its full black & white checked mating plumage upon migrating northward. I was quite interested to see this as we have loons up on the lake where we live in Michigan and in September the loons look much the same as they moult their feathers & go into transition once again and turn their feathers to all gray before they migrate south for the winter.
