Sightings report image

Number: 8

Today was an amazing monarch day! From around 12:30 to 3:00pm I saw at least 8 faded female monarchs laying eggs and nectaring. I did not see any males. It is hard to say the exact count as they traveled over a broad area of about 10 acres with trees interspersed. It was quite warm in the low 80's with full sun mostly. The humidity was 39% and it was breezy (SSW 10mph). They were activley seeking out favorable milkweed, laying eggs, and nectaring. The main nectar plant was the yellow thistle (Cirsium horridulum). Thankfully this plant is quite abundant this spring. Given the full sun and the warmth, they needed the nectar and interspersed egg-laying with sipping from these prickly fountains. They would say they aren't horrid at all ~~ in fact quite delicious!
