Over the past several weeks, approximately thirty larvae have hatched from the many eggs a passing female laid on my three Asclepias curassavica plants in pots. Two of the three plants were just purchased from Lowe's. Unfortunately, there have been a lot of tragedies. Quite a few of the larvae died at various instar stages; a few chrysalises turned black and rotted; and a few of the emerging adults had folded or wavy wings which didn't fully straighten, so were not able to fly. I would say about half of the larvae developed successfully and were able to fly off. Was it neonicatinoids or just bad genetics? I can't say. This hasn't happened when I have used only my own plants.
