Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/30/2017

Number: 1

The monarchs looked bright and new. We ended up having 3 females over the course of the day. Two of them were circling at the same time in the early afternoon and another came at early gloaming. Our temps have been warm and humid lately with a little wind. We had some rain the night before but no storms or heavy rain for a week or more. I have a nice stand of milkweed that they laid eggs on. I cut in back in late December and it's grown back considerably since then. We had 8 caterpillars on it but they have all gone off to make chrysalis'. I counted 7 eggs this morning on the milkweed. We have had swallowtails show up this week. Yellow sulphurs have been around for a little over a month. We haven't seen anything else yet but we've got host and nectar flowers ready for them.

Our past 3 winters have been so warm that we've had monarchs stay the entire winter within a 20 mile radius of here. We're 45 minutes from FL and on the east side of I-95 so our little microclimate has contributed to their staying through the winter, I think.
