Sightings report image

Date: 04/04/2017

Number: 11

Today was another beautiful morning. I went out into the dew-laden pastures from about 9:15am to 10:30am and saw 5 monarchs. It was mostly sunny, 67 degrees F, winds S 6mph, and humidity 89%. I saw monarchs flying, nectaring, egg-laying, and "sunning." I observed a male monarch sunning on some wild grape vines when, all of a sudden, he dived down toward the grass nearby and flushed a hidden (to me) female monarch and off they went on a spiraling chase. I followed a female who nectared on many Texas dandelions and then, after getting breakfast, began seeking out milkweed and laying eggs. Later, in the afternoon around 2pm, I went out briefly and saw two faded-winged females fluttering around the milkweed by our driveway and front yard. At 4:20pm I observed a monarch sailing around the house. It was by then a very warm day at 85 degrees F, humidity of 31%, winds S 11mph. By 7pm it was cooling a bit at 80 degrees F, humidity 45%, winds SE 8mph. I saw 3 male monarchs in various near locations patrolling the milkweed and wildflowers, with special devotion to yellow thistles. This is a photo of the beautiful female monarch as she nectared on a Texas dandelion (Pyrrhopappus pauciflorus) this morning.
