It was on the plum tree blossoms. it was a Monarch. Viceroys are smaller and more veins. Also the timing is off for Viceroys here since they overwinter and do not migrate. We hope to see another specimen soon and will try to get a picture to verify our sighting.
It looked fairly new, not worn or faded. Our weather has been unseasonably warm. We have had lots of cloudy weather but the day we saw the Monarch was sunny and almost 80. The milkweed isn't up yet or just coming up. I have a test plant in my garden. The same day we have seen a least one Red Admiral and a painted lady.
