Sightings report image

Date: 04/06/2017

Number: 10

At 11am it is a mild, sunny day with almost no wind, 64 degrees F, and humidity 43%. Within an hour I had seen at least 8 monarchs variously flying, nectaring, and egg-laying. In looking at some of the milkweed I saw quite a few newborn larvae. Later, in going outside briefly at around 1pm, I saw 2 males briefly sparring with each other and then flying low over their territories. This is a photo of a very faded-winged female monarch nectaring on a yellow thistle. Her wings are particularly tattered and I am wondering if she was caught in some of the storms that swept Texas on Sunday. I was glad she had some warm sunlight on her this morning and a rich nectar source to replenish her.
