The first monarch of the season visited our Waystation today, a large faded female searching for milkweed! I watched her taste the plants with her feet, finding short 2" milkweed shoots all over the garden. Thinking she deserved larger plants, I hustled over to a local nursery and bought several native swamp milkweed plants about 6-8" tall. I placed them through the garden (see photo) and she found them in no time! I now have lots of eggs to monitor! This is a good month earlier than prior years first sighting. I also saw 3 other monarchs as I was driving today, all single and flying with that recognizable undulating monarch flight!
