Just one monarch, but I'm looking for more. Some milkweed is up.
The one I saw took me by surprise bc it was in a partly-shaded part of the garden. I would say it was not a summer-bright monarch, but not as faded as the one that I saw on Journey North. It is early for monarchs here, for sure!
It has been blowing a lot here. We live on the water, just off the York River. I will look for monarch eggs on my Aesclepias plants today, and I will keep an eye out for monarchs. We have definitely had many Eastern tiger swallowtail butterflies, and a few black spicebush swallowtails. In Buckingham, Virginia, on April 4-5-6, we saw LOTS of Eastern Tiger Swallowtails. I think I have seen painted ladies. Will follow up when I see more monarchs, or discover eggs. I feel confident about my sighting.
