The monarch was flying near a weeping nootka fase cypress tree on the edge of an alfalfa field at Winterhaven Wildflowers Native Plant & Pollinator Preserve. The milkweed has not even popped up yet. All that is in bloom is dandelions and a few native ground-covers. It was definitely a monarch but couldn't get close enough to take a photo or determine gender.
