flying around blooming pittosporum. The monarch I saw was bright and new. The weather had been warmer than usual for the time of year. Sunny, dry, light wind, 70's. Very little milk weed in my neighborhood. I've planted butterfly weed, with limited success. Put some new very young plants in last fall, in several spots around my neighborhood. I have a gardening business and try to operate organically as much as possible. Butterfly weed is the only type of milkweed that I can grow in my immediate location. I've not seen much milkweed on Hatteras Island. They plants were not up yet when I saw the monarch I reported. More is coming up now (April 24). Every day seeing new sprouts. I'm watching for eggs, but have not seen any. I've seen giant swallow tails. We do have a fair amount of prickly ash, Hercules club, here in my neighborhood and on the island. I don't think I've seen any painted ladies or red admirals yet.
I think we may have a few adult monarchs that overwinter here. Because I have seen them sporadically here on nice warm winter days. I've noticed this for several years.
