Hummingbird, Other Species Sighted

Date: 04/15/2017

Number: 1

First female or male juvenile calliope seen in 2016 after I reported a mature male first appearing on April 11. Swallows have also returned and are feeding in mid-air nearby, indicating that flying insect food is available for hummers. Late Spring arrival means there still is not much tree or bush cover for hummers, as buds are just beginning. Calliope arrival here is 2 weeks later than in 2016 when by mid-April, trees and bushes were fully leaved and the insect population was considerable.
