Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 04/16/2017

Number: 1

Monarch in flight. I was driving a vehicle at the time. It flew in front of me. I did not hit it.

The monarch looked bright and new, although I only saw it as it flew in front of my vehicle while I was driving. I was excited as it was the first monarch sighting in 2017.

The weather has been above average temperatures for this time of year. The farmers are already out in the fields working the soil, and many are already planting crops. We have not had as much rain this Spring as expected, so the ground is drier than normal for this time of year. Spring is very early this year.

I have NOT seen any milkweed up yet. Just this past weekend I spotted 2 black swallowtails. They are the first of any swallowtail varieties I have seen this year. I have seen numerous Sulfers (white) and several Red Admirals already this season.
