Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 04/18/2017

Number: 3

3 individuals flying through over a few hours early afternoon.

The monarchs I saw in Goodland I was not able to get close enough to tell how worn they might have been. They were definitely moving right along. My job has me traveling all over western KS this time of year so I have covered a lot of area and it seems that the monarchs are nicely distributed through the western half of KS....just not enough people to report them as much. I have seen 1 black swallowtail, a lot of painted ladies and some red admirals in the last couple of weeks....Lilacs really draw them in. Our weather has been ahead of schedule, warmer than the same time last year....upper 70's into high 80's one day in the last week. Just had a cold snap last night (37F) but it didn't frost where I am (Garden City).
I have seen various species of milkweed emerging in southwest KS in the last couple of weeks (4 species in my yard). Showy milkweed is the predominant species in my area and I saw a lot of eggs on a patch of that species just yesterday (need to report!).
