One of the eggs that I found during the late afternoon of 4/15/2017 (and which I previously reported as the first of the season for Hastings) has successfully hatched. This happened at some point early this morning, so the egg stage has lasted nine days, give or take a half-day. I have now brought in 15 eggs to rear and release as adults, but I have also left more than twice that many outdoors. The eggs I’ve collected have come from dumps on three small common milkweeds here in Hastings. The majority of milkweeds that I’ve been checking, however, have had a total of three or fewer eggs, and the plants are growing quickly.
