Monarch Larva (FIRST sighted)

Date: 04/25/2017

Number: 13

Today I found 13 caterpillars, about 2-3 days old (stripes) on my common milkweed sprouts, ranging from about 3 inches to 6 inches. One caterpillar appears to be deceased…. I have not seen a Monarch. May is the earliest, and very rare, that I’ve had any eggs. Most years it can be July before I find any, and August in bad years. If I have small cats here, that sounds like an optimistic year for 2017. Usually they go Northeast and Northwest of me in the spring, and I have a long wait. My Black Swallowtails have been hatching over the last two weeks but I haven’t seen a single egg.

I found no eggs on any of the other forms of milkweed that are growing.
