Hummingbird, Ruby-throated (FIRST)
Sightings report image

Date: 05/02/2017

Number: 1

I sighted my first hummingbird for the 2017 season,(a male) at 12:50pm at one of my four feeders. At the time, the temperature was 47 degrees with wind gusts out of the Southwest of 5 to 15 mph and occasional wind driven drizzle. He stayed for two minutes and then departed for another of my feeders around the corner of the house. I continued to observe my feeders and presume it was him returning almost like clock work every ten minutes for the first hour, after my initial sighting. During the second hour I observed him returning every 20 minutes to one of the four feeders. From 3pm until 6pm I spot what appeared to be the same male hummer come to one of the feeders approximately every 30 minutes. Each time he left the feeders it appeared he stayed close to the house, possibly roosting in the dense evergreens up next to the house away from the wind.

Presently in bloom are our crab trees, magnolia, flowering dogwoods, eastern red bud tree and a few early weigelas. Small insects and spiders have also been spotted the week before when the temperatures were warmer.

Our temperature tonight is expected to dip into the mid 30's with little more than a breeze during the night. Tomorrow the temperature is expected to be in the low 50's and clear, so I will be curious to see if he may have moved on or continues to hang around.
