Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 05/04/2017

Number: 1

Very exciting to see a Monarch Butterfly in May - only saw them last fall.

It's amazing I know. My son and I raise about 50 monarchs last summer. I trust his judgment in identifying monarchs. I will try to get a picture if we see it again.

My son, Matthew (12 yo) is certain that it was a male Monarch (two dots) and not a Viceroy (no line) nor a Painted Lady (smaller). I checked our school grounds and see good milkweed plant growth - no eggs nor evidence of chewed leaves here. I understand if you want to leave the report in the general category but he stands by his observation. We will return to the house where he saw the MB and look at nearby milkweeds.

Editor’s Note: This as an exciting though unconfirmed sighting. The observer will check milkweed for eggs. If confirmed, this would be the first report for the state.
