Male, adult.
Sunny, +12C, 2:15PM, fed at feeder briefly. Have seen again May 12th and 13th (today). Nemesia also hung near same feeder. He has cautiously eaten briefly each day at the same feeder, and been sighted investigating 2 other feeders. Also seen sitting on the clothesline, a favourite perch of all hummingbirds that have spent time here. It's difficult to tell if this is a returning bird, or a migrating/new bird.
Last year the first sighting at home was May 12th, the two previous years were both May 8th. My hummingbirds seem to be utterly sensible and only show up after all chances of frost are gone. Despite the very warm April, and winter in general, they seemed determined to miss the minus nighttime temperatures that we had at the beginning of May. It makes my month plus (since April 8th!!) of feeder filling kind of pointless, but I'm ever hoping to attract some of the less wary scouts that get reported long before mine show up.
WELCOME BACK my little green bees!
