First adult I've seen this year. It was a nice warm day and it was flying around the trees on Farm Island Recreation Area.
I can't say I'm 100% sure as the butterfly didn't land for a perfect look. I do know the common butterflies - commas and red admirals have been flying in our area for weeks. I have not seen a viceroy yet, but I do know how to tell a viceroy from a monarch.
We have numerous monarchs migrate through this part of South Dakota. In fact, I tagged some two years ago. I also helped create a large butterfly garden here and have watched monarchs and other butterflies for hours.
I have not seen a monarch since that date, but I keep looking. Our milkweed species are coming up.
