On May 14 I visited Hedgerow Farms west of Sacramento which has the largest native milkweed farming operation in the western USA. They grow large fields of speciosa and fascicularis milkweed as a row crop in order to harvest and sell the seed.
Two of their large fields of speciosa milkweed were in bloom, but I saw no monarchs which indicates the adult monarch population in the area was very low as of May 14. However, I did see and video record one young, brightly colored new generation female laying eggs in their large field of fascicularis milkweed.
Here’s a 4 minute video of Hedgerow’s speciosa and fascicularis milkweed fields including the female I saw laying eggs: https://youtu.be/B6RzqNOMMIE
