Monarch Larva Sighted

Date: 06/21/2017

Number: 2

Saw two more monarch larvae feeding on common milkweed. A 3rd and 4th instar on different common milkweed plants. I did observe an adult monarch (sex unknown) feeding on common milkweed nectar. The common milkweed flowers are ever so slowly beginning to open up on my farm. The swamp milkweed flower buds are emerging in my wetland. I am not seeing as many adult monarchs daily as I did the first two full weeks of June. Anxiously awaiting the emergence of the third generation of adults sometime the first two full weeks in July. This year I estimate I have 5,000+ common milkweed plants in 65 acres of grassland CRP, both cool-season grasses and forbs (15 acres) and warm season grasses and prairie forbs (50 acres).
