Two monarchs that appeared to be males spent the while day trying to drive each other away from our large milkweed patches which occupy both sides of the house and garage. There were occasional visits that looked like females trying to lay eggs. The activity was so quick and frenetic that we rarely got a good look at the wings, but behaviorally I think we were able to determine the sex pretty accurately. We saw monarchs chasing each other, a black swallowtail, bumblebees, honeybees, and even a house wren (twice, with the wren appearing to take the threat seriously). The monarchs nectared on tithonia, common milkweed and swamp milkweed.
