Monarch Adult Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 07/18/2017

Number: 1

I saw my 9th monarch of the season today, laying eggs on a fresh milkweed plant just outside the milkweed patch of larger, older plants are growing. I collected one of the eggs to keep track of generation time.

We expect monarch numbers to start climbing now. Our first two captive monarchs emerged today, 34 days after they were laid as eggs. This is the beginning of a new generation, likely the great-grandchildren of the generation from Mexico. The eggs that were laid today will emerge about mid-August and migrate to Mexico. They will be the the great-great grandchildren.
