While I was gardening all day, 2 females were laying eggs on my milkweed patch.
the younger one laid eggs on the bigger milkweed, the older monarch usually chose the tiniest of the milkweed plants. Then she would rest on other plants for a minute before laying another egg. She also tried to chase away the younger monarch.
An hour later a male and female stopped in a flew off together. Another male hung around the butterfly bush and rose of sharon for awhile. He might have been brand new.
I planted 3 butterfly bushes in July and it seems to have attracted these monarchs and many swallowtails and painted lady butterfly.
Really neat to see the activity.
