Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 07/29/2017

Number: 1

While looking for Monarch eggs and caterpillars I spotted one Monarch butterfly flitting about a fallow field northeast of the First Baptist Church on Jacksonville Road, east of Bellefonte, PA. I never got close enough to determine the butterfly’s gender but my guess is that it was a female, as it was flying among numerous Common Milkweed plants, landing occasionally on leaves (where I assume it was laying eggs), but never on the flowers.
This was at about 11:00 AM, with scattered clouds, a temperature of 68F degrees, and a breeze from the NE at about 15 mph. I found several eggs (which I’ll describe in a separate report), but no caterpillars.
