Hummingbird, Nectaring from Flowers

Date: 08/05/2017

Number: 1

Monarch Waystation #271 reports a hummingbird seen this morning as I finished watering the front garden. I stood next to a flower trying to make out the bee on it when the bird nectared on the Torch Tithonia and Tropical Milkweeds right next to me. Its throat looked a little grayer than its chest, and as it swooped in front of me to the other Tithonia, I visually followed its path and then it became aware of my head movement and it hovered to look at me from ~10 feet away. The sun was behind it, and I noticed a bright white spot on either end of its fanned tail. The bird then went back to a brief taste of the 2nd Tithonia and took off towards the blooming Crepe Myrtle to the east, out of my line of sight.
