I had already planned to visit the Sleeping Bear Dunes today before listening to Dr. Duke Eisner's talk on monarchs yesterday, but I took extra time today to look for catepillars, and was rewarded with my first ever monarch caterpillar sighting in the wild! It was in a stand of common milkweed on the hill above the parking area of the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive overook #3, munching away quite happily (or so I imagined). Given the time of year, I imagine this will be one of the southern migration generation. Eat up and grow to be a healthy adult, little guy!
I also saw five adults. One was feeding on thistle near the #9 overlook of the Scenic drive, two were watering on a small still inlet of Lake Michigan to the north at Sleeping Bear Pointe/Glen Haven, and I spotted two more in that area walking back from the beach through the Maritime Museum, which had a stand common milkweed plants. Go monarchs!
