Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 08/11/2017

Number: 64

In walking our grassland this afternoon I saw 29 Monarchs, I would say mostly 3rd generation. They were getting faded and moving quite slowly. This evening I walked through our prairie remnant where I usually see the fall roosts. There was at least 35 Monarchs, quite pristine and energetic flying around the cottonwood trees where the fall roosts are normally seen. They were not roosting in a group but were chasing each other and landing in the trees individually. I suppose this would be considered pre- roost behavior. I will keep an eye out in the next couple of days to see if any small roosts are formed, although it is a bit early for that in our area. Exciting to see a lot of Monarchs and what I believe to be an overlap of the 3rd and 4th generation.
