Sightings report image

Date: 08/12/2017

Number: 14

Observed over the weekend, Aug 12th/13th at Point Pelee a bit of Premigration Migration behaviour. Late afternoon about a dozen monarchs flitted up & down East Beach near the Tip.
Saw 2 monarchs flitting about off west path at Tip, in meadow south of Tip parking lot.
Upon checking at dusk could not locate a roost but did see one monarch flitting & then settle on a tree.
It was about 26°c with a very strong westerly wind. East side was calm.
Goldenrod is showing yellow & starting to bloom; no buds yet on asters.
Over the last 3 days I have seen 1-2 monarchs in directional flight south....on a mission....mostly faded & males. Did have a couple roosting in our tree overnight Aug 11th to 12th.
In 2016 on Aug 21st a number of small roosts totalling about 60 monarchs were seen in trees & on grapevine at East Beach at Tip.
It is said that Peak Migration occurs about a month after Premigration. We will soon see even more Migrating activity :)
I plan to start tagging Sept 1st.
