Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 08/17/2017

Number: 2

Here in the south Okanagan Valley of BC along a N-S lake-river flyway, we have seen only calliopes consistently all summer, with isolated exceptions of brief rufous visits. The predominance of approx. 8 female calliopes with one male throughout most of the summer have reduced now to one female calliope remaining in the area (as of Aug 4-17) and one female rufous. Weeks of continuous high valley heat (>90s-110s F), smoke from nearby wildfires, and reduced insect availability (assessed by fewer swallows and bats in the area) point to likely "autumn" early-migration factors.
