Monarch Adult Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 08/19/2017

Number: 225

High 28°c mostly sunny 18 mph NW wind which changed around 6 pm to NNW 10 mph.
Through the day at our home just outside the park I observed about a dz. Monarchs flit through in directional flight south toward Point Pelee National Park. I did also have an ovipositing female on our Common MW.
A friend was volunteering in the park & along west shore she observed around 10 am about a dz monarchs in 2-3 minutes journeying south toward the Tip.
Having known that a friend NE of here had test tagged monarchs earlier in the week & noted they left journeying west & had not returned or stayed around his area, & with favorable wind I planned to visit the park.
Upon leaving our home around 4 pm, 3 were seen flitting south across our road toward park. Moments later upon entering the park immediately another 4 were seen flitting south.
Upon arriving at the Tip and between 5 pm til 6 pm a total of about 200 had been seen. A mix of faded & fresh, males & females, even a mated pair, some crossing the lake journeying south, some attempting to & others not, One nectaring....
East side of Tip was calm & initially west side was windy & lake was rough.
No tagged ones seen & no roost found later;we had left the Tip between 6:15-7:10 to take the shuttle to retrieve our vehicle. During this time the wind calmed & upon returning west side was now also calm. I believe during this time many crossed the lake as approx only 25 were seen, mostly over west path & no roosts located. The Monarchs seen simply settled individually.
In 2016, Aug 21st our migration season began with 60 roosting in the park.
225 or so on this date is wonderful to see!!
