Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 08/02/2017

Number: 36

This is to record the sightings of Craig Matthys.
Just south of Ashland (near Atkins Lake).
Craig reports have seen lots of butterflies as they drove along the roads near Atkins Lake. I am guessing that he saw dozens of them.
That night, northern Wisconsin experienced thunderstorms, so I am guessing that the next day was a cold, high pressure, blue sky day with winds out of the north or northwest. At any rate, a couple of days later, Craig saw almost no monarchs. It is my guess that those August 2 monarchs began migrating when conditions were right.
I generally look for migrating monarchs after August 15th in the Osceola area (about the same latitude as Minneapolis and St. Paul); I have been told that the migration starts earlier, the further north you are.
August 2nd would be a good guess for the south shores of Lake Superior.
Thanks for the info, Craig!
